Next Steps provides individual and group therapy that focuses on the impact of trauma and grief in the African/American community and uses a variety of therapeutic interventions to treat clients. Others include CBT, Solution Focused, Talk Therapy, and DBT.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) will be the primary model for group therapy and will focus on 4 major components (emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness and interpersonal effectiveness) DBT is an evidenced based intervention effective in addressing trauma and grief. The target age group for these services is 18-26 both male and female.
Next Steps also offers individual life coaching services that will assist youth in preparing a concise road map to wellness. Life coaching consists of 1:1 counseling and builds upon skills learned in group, and/or individual therapy.
Community family engagement:
Next Steps offers intermittent pop-up opportunities providing the community with safe places/spaces to share and process trauma and grief. Pop up opportunities can be in person or virtual using social media platforms. These events provide opportunities for informal education around mental health issues and concerns.
Staff:
Kevin Tanner holds a Master's degree in Social Work from Portland State University and is Licensed as a Psychotherapist by the Board of Behavioral Sciences in California. Kevin is the Co-owner of Next Steps Therapy in Sacramento and also works for the State of
California as Supervisory Social Worker with State Parole. Kevin has worked in multiple mental health settings including prison, juvenile detention, psychiatric hospitals, elementary, middle,
and high schools.
Kevin contracts currently with Sacramento County where he provides individual counseling to CPS affected clients. Kevin works with multiple insurance companies providing individual therapy to clients. Kevin has 20+years of experience in the mental health/social work field. Kevin has experience providing high quality individual and group therapy and is uniquely able and qualified to meet the mental health needs of the African/American community in Sacramento.
Angela Coxeff-Tanner holds a Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration and is a certified/licensed Life Coach. Angela brings 20+ years experience in the nonprofit private sector to Next Steps. Angela works closely with young women/mothers ages 18 to 30 providing coaching/counseling services.
